Have you ever read of the Massai Olympics? Read up here.
An African group has and it seems, will continue proving to the rest of the world that Africans also have their version of the Grecian sports festival. According to Waza Africa, the Maasai Olympics have been taking place every year since 2012. Four villages in the Kimana region gather to compete in six track and field events, which include traditional warrior skills, such as Massai club throwing (known as ‘rungu’) and Maasai-style high jump.
The tournament was established as an alternative to the traditional Maasai rite of passage to manhood, which included the
hunting and killing of lions.
